The random map generator is fantastic, offering up realistic terrain (mountain ranges, rain shadow, coastal areas) and granting a limited selection of surrounding resources. The resources that are immediately available will drive early production, and the remainder must be traded for. The art style is striking, and while the tool-tips are fantastic, the interface lacks several features, such as a list of all buildings and clans, plus easy switching between the settlement and research views. The first difference between At the Gates and traditional 4X games is the use of towns and citizens. First, there is only one settlement that can train workers in new jobs and research new professions. If you want a game like Civilization, maybe because you've loved Civ 5 and you've recognised its lead developer's name, know that this game is very very different. It has hexes, it has some military units, and it has Romans and Huns, but that's all.
Jon Shafer's at the Gate Free For PC is a pleasing game with awesome atmosphere, and a pleasing experience for the 4X games diggers who want to implement new things. BUT not a finished game, diplomacy is an important part of it, of the promised on the Kickstarter 7 years ago, and will only be added afterwards, and the interface has cool features (like the tooltips-in-tooltips) but a great progress margin for quality-of-life If you like survival games, or 4X games very turned into resource gatherings, I think of Age of Empires or Northgard, then I'ld say this game is quite close to that, with an original gameplay.The map is quite alive, with the seasons (winter) transforming it, making for a dynamic gameplay. There are different resources with different quantities and limited stock.
Jon Shafer's At the Gates Full Version is an interesting take on the 4x game genre. It blends in familiar mechanics from similar titles while also molding out some originality of its own. Definitely some of the highlights that will draw newcomers into this game are: The depth of the gameplay meaning there a TON of choices to take in turns of branching research paths, unit placements, and of course the permanent settlement of your Kingdom! That's right, you start with one caravan similar to a Civ town that you're able to pack up and move around to take advantage of various resources before deciding you've found the perfect spot. Each turn passes half a month in time so every move can be very rewarding/punishing when thrust suddenly into Winter or a Caravan trade that you weren't prepared for. The art style seemed wonky to me at first but it grew on me overtime. At the moment there are only two ways to win a game which are either defeating the civilazations that spawn at the West or East of the map by force or from within.
